Apéritifs & Digestifs for the Festive Season

For much of the year, most of us might not indulge in apéritifs and digestifs, but with the festive season offering an opportunity of a more leisurely pace, we’ve put together a nice list of things to bookend your meals.

Whether the festive season or otherwise, we can think of few better ways to begin a meal than Mauro Vergano’s Vermouth or Americano. Served on the rocks with a glug of soda and a slice of citrus, they offer the kind of bittersweet refreshment that really whets the appetite.

Lesser known, Mauro’s Chinato is amongst the best digestifs we have found. Full of exotic spice, it is truly Christmas in a glass and is wonderful alongside mince pies or chocolate.

When it comes to sweet wine, we only work with one, Ezio Cerruti’s Sol. A late harvest of Moscato aged in old barrels for years before release, it offers a tightrope balance of salt, flowers, fruit and nuts, meaning it is just as suited to pudding as it is a big hunk of Stilton.

If vino da meditazione is your thing, then Nino Barraco’s Alto Grado wines are sure to satisfy. Deeply savoury and impossibly long, they offer a true taste of yesteryear in the seaside town of Marsala.

Last but not least we have a wonderful grappa from Nadia at Cascina Tavijn, which is made from the pomace of the family’s Ruché. The variety’s perfume offers gentle floral notes before the fire hits, making it just the thing to punctuate a meal.

The thing all these drinks share is their longevity. They will last for months if kept in a cool, dark place after opening, making them a versatile asset for any cellar.
