After a wonderful visit to their home in Saint-Germain-sur-Vienne back in February, it’s time to share two beautiful wines from Loire Valley vignerons, Claire and Florent Bejon.
Now the days have gotten shorter and the last of the leaves are falling, few grape varieties make quite as much sense in the depths of autumn as Cabernet Franc and those that Claire and Florent craft are truly one of a kind. In terms of texture and perfume, the Bejons’ wines have more in common with the great wines of Beaujolais than the burly Cabernets one often finds in this part of the world.
This remains the case despite just how hot and dry the 2022 vintage was. It was a challenging year to navigate in the Loire, particularly in the cellar and it is one in which only the most skilled winemakers have excelled. Reflecting the year that was, the wines are a little darker and deeper than usual and perhaps a little more classical in style. These are plush, generous wines which are already drinking beautifully and work so well alongside the more robust cooking we turn to at this time of year.
