Today we introduce the best collection of wines we’ve tasted from young Alsatian vigneron, Lambert Spielmann.
The story of wine in Alsace is often rather patriarchal and so Lambert stands out as one of just a handful of young growers who, not being born into a wine dynasty, has started from scratch. Over the past few years he has managed to amass around three hectares of vines split over small parcels and varied soils in the villages of Epfig, Northalten, Obernai and Reichsfeld.
Like many of the great wine regions, the hills of Alsace possess an alarming amount of monoculture. Wary of this and with an eye to the future, Lambert seeks out parcels hidden away amongst nature, trying to harness as much of its energy as possible. As a result, his vineyards teem with life and possess a vibrancy captured so beautifully in his wines.
These new releases all come from last year’s harvest, a challenging year in the field that has produced truly stunning wines. There is such an increase in clarity and detail that this vintage feels a little like a coming of age for one of the Alsace’s true originals.
