We are thrilled to share a new vintage of sublime Grenache from Rié and Hirofumi Shoji’s Pedres Blanques.
In Catalan, Pedres Blanques means ‘white rocks’ and this remarkable vineyard found high in the hills above the seaside town of Collioure takes its name from an outcrop of granite that sits amongst the three and a half hectares of vines.
There is a real energy to be found in this breathtakingly beautiful, remote place, where old vines of Grenache grow wild over a complex mix of granite and schist. At almost four hundred metres above sea level, it is one of the highest sites in the region and the elevation, along with a constant breeze from the Mediterranean, lends a luminous quality to their wines.
In the cellar, their work is characterised by a lightness of touch which renders soulful wines of great character, depth and finesse. Although it was yet another warm, dry year, the 2022 vintage also proved to be a relatively generous one within the context of these parts, allowing the two to harvest a reasonable quantity of grapes for the first time since 2019. Whilst the wine is already showing beautifully, it will no doubt reward those patient enough to keep a few bottles aside for the coming years.
Having received a few more cases than usual, we are happy to make some available for our retail customers to enjoy at home, with a limit of one bottle per person.
